In latest entry in our Women in Mobility Spotlight series, highlighting members of our Women in Mobility Peer Group. , we connected with Narges Rahimi, a research assistant at the University of Windsor.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
As a PhD candidate, I have been working for the past three years on the security of vehicular systems, specifically focusing on heavy-duty vehicles. My research utilizes Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) methodologies in alignment with the ISO/SAE 21434 standard.
What does ‘mobility’ mean to you?
For me, mobility is closely related to vehicular systems. In the context of systems engineering, mobility represents a comprehensive network of vehicles comprised of various subsystems and components, each with different aspects—one of which is security.
What motivated you to pursue a career or interest in the mobility industry?
Having worked in this field for the past three years, I have developed a strong understanding of the security of vehicular systems, including passenger cars, trucks, buses, and more. I am now interested in pursuing a role in this sector where I can apply my expertise and contribute further.
What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on in the industry or classroom?
Threat analysis and risk assessment of vehicles (TARA).
Going back to what ‘mobility’ means to you, what do you think is the biggest challenge or obstacle facing the industry today?
Considering my expertise, I believe we have many challenges in security of vehicles as vehicles are becoming more connected.
How do you see the role of women evolving in the mobility industry in the future, and what changes would you like to see?
Greater contributions from women are needed in this sector. Women should support one another and work together to increase their impact and contributions in this field.
Can you share any personal experiences or anecdotes that highlight the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in the mobility space?
My supervisor and all the core members of our lab are women, and we have one of the leading automotive security labs at the University of Windsor.
