On March 5th, Hackforge Windsor hosted local data enthusiasts and community leaders for a special watch party of the 2025 Canadian Open Data Awards, hosted by the Canadian Open Data Society (CODS). The awards might have been presented live from Edmonton, but Hackforge added a local spin to the event by recognizing a Windsor-Essex data leader with its own Windsor-Essex Data Champion 2025 award.
This year, Workforce WindsorEssex received the honor for its contributions to making data accessible and actionable in the region. The award was presented by Doug Sartori, Hackforge co-founder, Principal Consultant at Parallel 42, and host of the podcast Mean, Median, and Moose. In his speech, Sartori celebrated Workforce WindsorEssex’s work in data visualization and accessibility:
“From the WEData ecosystem and census mapping tools to the WEJobs board, Workforce WindsorEssex has consistently demonstrated how data wielded with purpose can transform a community. Their commitment to packaging accurate data in easy-to-consume products is the standard every other not-for-profit organization should compare themselves to.”
Accepting the award on behalf of Workforce WindsorEssex, CEO Justin Falconer expressed gratitude for the recognition:
“Workforce WindsorEssex appreciates the recognition. We’re proud of our data products, which are used by workforce development boards throughout Ontario and beyond.”
Hackforge’s hybrid event welcomed local open data leaders in-person, and enthusiasts online via Discord, providing an accessible space for open data advocates to engage with the award show. The Canadian Open Data Society’s event featured eight awards, recognizing excellence in the field of open data across Canada.
“Events like these highlight the power of data to drive informed decision-making, foster transparency, and spark innovation,” said Sartori. “By celebrating both national and local achievements, we reinforce the importance of open data in shaping our communities.”
