Two weeks ago, something exciting happened in downtown Windsor.
An entire ecosystem came together. New collaborations were announced. Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate regional innovation. Entrepreneurs, students, industry leaders, government officials, and community members filled our streets, our event spaces, and our conversations with optimism about what’s possible for our region.
Our inaugural Innovation Week wasn’t about a single event or moment; it was about showcasing the momentum that’s building across our region and taking another step toward creating a more connected innovation ecosystem.

WEtech Alliance Named an OVIN Regional Technology Development Site
Innovation Week kicked off with the official local announcement that WEtech Alliance has been selected as an Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) Regional Technology Development Site (RTDS).
This investment will help accelerate the commercialization of automotive and mobility technologies while supporting startups and scaling companies throughout Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. More importantly, it provides another opportunity for local innovators to access the funding, programming, mentorship, and connections they need to grow.
“Windsor-Essex is uniquely positioned to help shape the future of mobility, bringing together world-class automotive and manufacturing expertise, a strategic cross-border location, and a growing innovation ecosystem. We are proud to build on the strong foundation established by Invest WindsorEssex and our regional partners, whose leadership helped position the region as a key destination for mobility innovation. Through the OVIN Regional Technology Development Site program, we will continue connecting SMEs to the infrastructure, industry expertise, testing environments, and commercialization pathways they need to develop, prototype, validate, and bring next-generation mobility technologies to market faster. Together, we are strengthening Ontario’s innovation economy while creating new opportunities for investment, talent, and economic growth in Windsor-Essex.”

Connecting Industry, Innovation and Community
On June 24th, we welcomed business leaders, ecosystem partners, entrepreneurs, elected officials, and community members for a full day of collaboration in the city’s core.
The day began with a sold-out luncheon and fireside chat in partnership with the Windsor-Essex Chamber of Commerce and the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association: Built in Windsor-Essex: Auto, Manufacturing and the Future of Innovation.
Featuring Chamber CEO Ryan Donally and APMA President Flavio Volpe, the discussion centred around the opportunities and challenges facing Canada’s automotive and manufacturing sectors as emerging technologies, electrification, automation, and global competition continue to reshape how we build, move, and compete.
The celebration then continued outside with a special Tech Connect: Innovation District Edition, powered by our neighbour and longtime partner, Rocket Innovation Studio.
For the afternoon, Ferry Street was closed to traffic and transformed into a vibrant hub of innovation featuring interactive technology demonstrations and an SME showcase featuring companies and entrepreneurs building the latest advancements right in our own backyard including RIIS, Estare, AuthencoreAI, Loop Parking, and , as well as the University of Windsor’s all electric stock car team.
The event also featured a great opportunity to connect with our tech and innovation community as we officially unveiled the new Innovation District banners (more on that below.)

Welcome to the Innovation District
One of the week’s most visible milestones was the official unveiling of the new Innovation District in downtown Windsor.
Led by WEtech Alliance in collaboration with Rocket Innovation Studio, the University of Windsor, St. Clair College, Invest WindsorEssex, and the City of Windsor, the initiative establishes a visible identity for the growing concentration of innovation-focused organizations, businesses, entrepreneurs, and talent located in the city’s core.
The launch, powered by the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), was marked by the unveiling of a series of Innovation District banners throughout the downtown corridor surrounding Ferry, Pitt, and Chatham streets, symbolizing a collective commitment to fostering entrepreneurship, advancing technology, attracting investment, and building a stronger innovation economy for the region.
But the Innovation District represents more than just a geographic location. It reflects a growing community of founders, researchers, students, businesses, investors, and partners who are working together to build the future of innovation in our region.
It’s a visible reminder that innovation happens here, and that this district will continue to evolve as more organizations and entrepreneurs become part of its story.
The week also included other engaging community events including another fantastic YQG – Startups & AI walks hike with entrepreneur Jay Coulter, as well as the launch of our ScaleUP cohort 10 applications, and an AI workshop for our women founders: “The Future of Search: AI Visibility Strategies for Women Founders,” hosted by Katie Stokes of Blab Media.

The Innovation District is about creating more opportunities for entrepreneurs and industry to connect, find talent, and grow. This is not the finish line, it’s the beginning. Today we’re unveiling banners, but what we’re really launching is a long-term effort to bring people together and create the conditions for innovation to thrive in Windsor Essex. While the Innovation District has a home in downtown Windsor, its success will be measured by the opportunities and connections it creates for entrepreneurs, businesses, talent, and communities across the entire region.”

Over the coming months, we’ll continue building momentum through new programming, partnerships, events, and opportunities designed to connect innovators with the resources they need to succeed.
Here’s what’s coming up next:
Downtown Co-Working Days
Innovation happens when people collide, connect, and create together.
Join us for our first free Co-Work in the Core session in Downtown Windsor’s new Innovation District, where founders, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and ecosystem partners can spend the day collaborating, building new connections, and experiencing the energy of the district firsthand.
Our first session will take place on Wednesday, July 22, at the St. Clair College Centre for the Arts. Registration is required (so we know how much coffee to brew) and wifi, desk space and access to meeting areas are included.
Powered by OVIN and caffeinated by Polar Joe, these pop-up co-working days are designed to bring founders, entrepreneurs, remote workers, students, and ecosystem partners together in different innovation spaces throughout downtown Windsor.
It’s an opportunity to build new connections, collaborate, and experience the growing Innovation District firsthand.
Additional co-working days at partner locations will be announced throughout the summer.

Innovation doesn’t happen in a week.
It happens every day through the entrepreneurs building new companies, the researchers solving complex challenges, the students developing new ideas, the partners investing in our community, and the organizations working together to support them.
Innovation Week gave us the opportunity to celebrate that momentum, but it also marked the beginning of what’s next.
