5G Connectivity for Border Crossing Challenge
February 15, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
The year is 2026 and the Gordie Howe International Bridge has become the primary means of land-based trade and mobility between Canada and the United States. During peak hours, congestion on the bridge and ports of entry lead to significant wait times for commuters and commercial transport vehicles. The bridge has been equipped with infrastructure that allows it to integrate new technologies, including 5G connectivity and edge computing, to enhance cross-border trade, safety, efficiency, and overall usability.
The 5G Connectivity for Border Crossing Challenges calls on students to utilize 5G connectivity, smart mobility technologies, and data analytics (cloud and/or edge-based) to propose a solution for reducing border crossing congestion and wait times. Your solution may also include new payment and/or security technologies. Consider solutions that are user-driven and can help make the Gordie Howe International Bridge an efficient and reliable mode of cross-border transportation between the United States and Canada.
Eligible Participants
Eligible participants include post-secondary students in Ontario. It is highly encouraged to consider multi-disciplinary (can be multi-institutional as well) teams to tackle the proposed challenge; however, it is not a requirement. Students can use design thinking, solution drafting, and business planning in presenting their solutions. Only individual students or teams of a maximum of five members will be accepted.
Finalists will pitch their proposed solutions to a panel of expert judges on May 10, 2023! The top three winning teams will get access to a career development mentorship session, courtesy of GM Canada, PLUS monetary prizes*:
First-place, sponsored by TELUS: CAD$1,500 plus cellphones
Second-place, sponsored by the University of Windsor: CAD$1,000
Third-place, sponsored by APMA: CAD$500
*Monetary prizes are a total amount provided to the winning group
