What must Canada do to reverse the current decline in automotive assembly?
In spite of a North American sales increase of over 1 million units in 2013 and a new light vehicle sales record in Canada, light vehicle assembly in Canada last year declined!
At one time Canada accounted for nearly 18% of North American assembly. That has dropped to just over 15% in 2013 and is expected to decline to 14% or less by 2020. Canada was once the fourth largest assembler of vehicles in the world, today it is tenth.
Global vehicle manufacturers have invested approximately $43.2 billion in North American assembly plants in recent years with Canada receiving only $2 billion of this investment. Mexico now exports more than three times the auto parts to the U.S. as does Canada and is poised to pass Canada as the leading exporter of finished vehicles to the U.S.
