‘IP Opportunities and Challenges for New Companies: Using Design Patents to Protect High Technology’
There has been a growing use and interest in design patents or industrial design registration particularly as it relates to high tech, software, and Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs).  Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a $400 million verdict in the Apple versus Samsung smartphone design patent saga.  The session will focus on building an IP strategy highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities for new companies. Jim Hinton, Lawyer and Patent/Trademark Agent with Bereskin & Parr LLP, will be leading the session.

• Jim Hinton is an intellectual property lawyer and patent and trademark agent with Bereskin & Parr LLP. He works with innovators to strategically protect their intellectual property rights in a wide range of technologies. Jim is a former research fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) where he examined international, transnational and domestic IP law within a practical and experiential context. Jim also teaches “Intellectual Property for Engineers”, a graduate Engineering course at Western University. An experienced engineer, Jim has specialized in engineering design and project management in the automotive and the fiberglass manufacturing industries. He uses his technical experiences to help innovators, from local start-ups to large international corporations.
