IP Protection Certification Workshop @ EPICentre

LLIPTEK is Canada’s first and only comprehensive intellectual property and technology commercialization training program geared towards universities and academia, students, the institutional sector, entrepreneurs, start-ups and technical specialists.
This workshop is open to all University of Windsor students, EPICentre members, entrepreneurs and past EPICentre workshop participants. At the end of this worksop, you will be provided with an “Intellectual Property Protection” certificate of completion.
Prior to attending the workshop, you must watch the 9 module videos available at http://elliptek.com in the order listed below:

1. WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY? – In order to fully understand inventions, invention analysis and patentability, the program begins at the most fundamental level with a discussion of of the core principles of ‘property’. From there, this module carries the concept of property forward to ‘intellectual property’, to explain what intellectual property is, how it works and how it relates to traditional notions of property.
2. WHAT ARE PATENTS? – The concept of ‘patents’ is explored. Misconceptions regarding ‘patents’ are covered and similar to ‘property’, a fundamental understanding of the concept of patentability is discussed in detail. The program concludes with an explanation of how patents apply to inventions.
3. HOW TO CONDUCT AN INVENTION ANALYSIS – The legalities of what constitutes an invention is covered in detail, in terms of the essential elements of invention: Subject Matter; Novelty; Inventiveness; Utility/Usefulness.
4. WHAT IS NOVELTY? – The patent system revolves around the related concepts of ‘novelty’ and ‘disclosure’. Accordingly, novelty is at the heart of the patent system and this element of invention is discussed.
5. WHAT ARE PATENT CLAIMS? DEFINING THE BOUNDARIES OF INVENTION – ‘Claims’ are quite possibly the most important, and most challenging aspect of the patent system. If patents are a form of property, then a patent claim is the fence surrounding and defining your property. What ‘claims’ are and how they work is explored.
6. HYPOTHETICAL INVENTION CASE STUDY #1 – A basic hypothetical invention case study is discussed, in order to demonstrate the interplay between novelty and claims.
7. HYPOTHETICAL INVENTION CASE STUDY #2 – A complex hypothetical invention case study is discussed, in order to dive a bit deeper into novelty analysis and claiming novel subject matter.
8. HOW TO DRAFT/FILE A PATENT APPLICATION – Using the hypothetical invention from Case study #2, the patent application process is covered including examination of the substance and contents of a patent application.
9. BONUS MODULE (HYPOTHETICAL INVENTION CASE STUDY #3) – A third hypothetical invention case study is presented for viewers’ independent analysis and consideration.

The workshop will begin on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 8:30 am. During the workshop, the facilitator will expand on the lessons from the videos, provide additional reading material and slides and go through a number of hypotheticals for further learning purposes. A certificate of completion will be handed out to all participants who have completed the training modules online and the in-class workshop.
