The Law and Entrepreneurship SpeakHER Series 2023 is a virtual speaker series that explores the implication of the law in business decisions for entrepreneurs in various industries. It is hosted by EPICentre with sponsorship from Professor Myra Tawfik, Don Rodzik Family Chair in Law and Entrepreneurship. Each session will involve a dialogue with accomplished female founders sharing their lived experiences dealing with the law and their lawyers. This session will feature speakHER Surria Fadel, Co-Founder, and COO of Cedar Valley Selections. We will engage in an interview with Surria to learn more about the legal implications of her business being in the food industry. We will chat about the unique challenges as a female entrepreneur involved with “protecting the secret sauce”. The event will be moderated by Relina D’Cruz, a Single JD Student in the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law.

SPEAKER BIO:

Surria Fadel is the Co-Founder & COO of Cedar Valley Selections. In 2015 she partnered with her 16-year-old son to start up a grass-roots CPG company selling a line of all-natural, preservative-free salad dressings and authentic style pita chips. More recently in 2020, the mom-son duo opened up their own pita chip manufacturing facility in Oldcastle, Ontario.

Prior to Cedar Valley, Surria spent several years in the fitness industry in many roles including Personal Trainer, Coach, Fitness Instructor, and Pain Management Therapist. It was a natural transition for her, going from coaching people to living a better life to making healthy, nutritional products to improve their overall well-being.

Surria was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and has a Bachelors of Science (Hons.) in Psychology. Upon graduating, she married a nice Canadian man and moved to London, Ontario. She has five children and her business partner, Ameen, is the youngest. Now located in Windsor, Ontario, her goal is to grow Cedar Valley and give back to the community, focusing on feeding the hungry and supporting orphans.

Through her experience in starting a company from grassroots, she has found a need to help other female start-ups in their journey. She has mentored several women entrepreneurs and has worked closely with the local Small Business Centre to support, advise, and share her experience and knowledge (both successes and failures) with the hope of making their journey a little easier.
