Lunch and Learn: Action Learning

September 19, 2013 @ 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

IDENTIFY THE REAL PROBLEM … HEAD IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
This is a simple statement, but often difficult to implement. Usually the problem we identify is merely a symptom of the real problem. We assume we are right, but we do not dig down to the root of the issue that is confronting us and consequently we create a solution for the wrong problem. There is a powerful yet simple process called “ACTION LEARNING” that enables any organization (small or large; for profit or non-profit) to assure that it does head in the right direction. Action Learning (AL) has two rules and 6 components. Simply stated, in a formal setting, the process begins as the problem holder brings together 6-8 people with diverse backgrounds and presents the dilemma to them. The group, which has received direction from a qualified AL Coach, begins by asking a question. There is no discussion within the group unless it is in answer to a question. The questions lead both the group and the problem presenter to arrive at a consensus to the ‘real’ problem. Goals and/or a strategy to reach a solution are formulated.
An amazing by-product of implementing AL for problem solving is that the team quickly develops cohesion. Further, each team member selects, works on, and develops specific leadership competencies during the process. The more frequently the team works together in AL sets, the better they become in solving problems and the greater their competencies.
Also, each person develops a deeper thought process and learns to ask ‘great’ probing questions.
In Action Learning, “LEARNING” is just as important as problem solving.  Therefore, the AL Coach works to help the team identify learning opportunities throughout the process.
