TechBoost: Cyber Security for Small Business (Belle River)

July 11, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

$20.00

Generously funded by a Libro Credit Union Prosperity Grant, The TechBoost Program supports the growth and development of small businesses in Windsor-Essex by providing affordable training in information technology tools and products for business. TechBoost is an initiative of Hackforge, supported by the WindsorEssex Small Business Centre.

Skill Level: Beginner

Audience: Owners or employees of businesses who want to understand the best practices to keeping their small business safe, secure and backed up.

Pain Points:

Do you worry that your business is not as secure as it could be?
Do you need to hire a security consultant and want to know what to ask for?
Do you want to be prepared in the event of a security breach?

Why Take this Workshop: According to Canada’s Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, “As a small or medium business, it’s easy to think that you are too small to warrant the attention of cyber criminals. In fact, cyber criminals are now actively targeting smaller businesses because they believe their computers are vulnerable.” The largest growth area for targeted cyber attacks in 2012 was businesses with fewer than 250 employees — 31% of all attacks targeted them. Imagine what those numbers look like now in 2018.

Goal: By the end of this workshop, you’ll understand what parts of your business you need to protect, what are the risks and and threats, and how to identify and monitor tools to address these threats. You’ll come away with some steps you can take to make your business more secure.

We’ll cover:

• Why small businesses make ideal targets for hacking and cyber threats, especially if they don’t have their own IT staff
• How to choose somebody to handle the security of a network and website
• How to train staff on security best practices (downloading suspicious files, using weak passwords, etc)
• Outline of tools and best practices for backing up data
• Benefits and downsides to used cloud services
• So you’ve been hacked – now what?

Materials: If you would like to follow along using a laptop computer during this workshop, please feel free to do so. A computer is not required, however.

Participants of this workshop are also welcome to attend any of our Open TechBoost Nights at Hackforge where you can bring your laptop and try out new tools in a casual environment with other business owners.
