Social media has completely overturned how modern-day society functions. In this age of technology, accessing pertinent information is as easy as checking up on your friends’ whereabouts. Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare… They’re all platforms with which people can stay up to date on each-other’s lives and feel a little closer – from a distance. Twitter, more specifically, lets its users interact and share tidbits of information instantly. This isn’t just useful for creeping friends; following the right sources can lead to a constant inflow of very interesting and important information! It’s no wonder most companies and even cities have their own Twitter accounts to keep people up to date. Luckily, the Windsor-Essex community is already on top of trends and boasts a large number of Twitter accounts that can keep curious citizens in the “know” on any range of topics.
The City of Windsor: This Twitter feed will certainly make sure you always get to work on time! The City of Windsor’s own account posts almost daily about new construction areas and detour routes. It really is the prime feed to follow as a Windsor driver. To boot, the City also tweets about important committee meetings and new local developments. You may even find yourself receiving weather updates if it will effect community areas or events. Be punctual and informed by following @CityWindsorON.
Craig Pearson: Windsor Star reporter and columnist Craig Pearson is a pretty avid tweeter. A combination of international news and wacky local stories plaster his Twitter feed several times a day. Craig even includes occasional information about local events. For an occasionally fun, partly serious, and always informative follow, look up Craig Pearson @WinStarPearson.
Arts Council Windsor: More of the artsy type? Windsor has a very unique, melting-pot type of culture which leads to a huge art and music scene. Need to stay up to date on local galleries and cultural events? The non-profit ACW has got you covered! Daily tweets cover a wide range of interesting content – from media arts, to paint; even interviews with local artists makes the mix. Even for the established artist, the ACW provides information about professional art workshops and events that enable local artists to showcase themselves. Stay in the art loop! Follow the Arts Council Windsor @theACWR.
The Windsor Scene: Staying within the theme of arts, The Windsor Scene is self-described as “Windsor’s premiere news source on local original music since 1999.” You can bet that the Scene’s Twitter description doesn’t just talk the talk. The most common tweets are quick to grab anyone’s attention, starting with either “show alert,” or “cool music alert.” The first alert announces up-to-date local music show information. The latter provides CD or digital music updates from artists. Support a local band! Find out when and where the newest up-and-comers will be playing by following @WindsorScene.
Bob Duff: In comes a curve ball with the final member of the list: Bob Duff. The sports columnist for the Windsor Star may not always stick to local content, but he sure does post a lot! Covering anything from NFL top stories and Tiger’s game updates to local sports news, Bob definitely keeps himself and his followers up to date. It’ll take some sifting, but local sports aficianados will love all of the Spitfires news. You may even find a post or two about local jockeying! Plump up your giant “number one” foam glove and follow Bob Duff @asktheduffer.
