Hacking Health Windsor-Detroit is the world’s first cross-border Hacking Health conference that invites professionals from the health care & IT sectors — including doctors, nurses, hospital administrators & CEOs, computer programmers, graphic designers, technology companies, students and investors — to come together. Talent will converge over the course of a weekend to form teams that dream up, design and build mobile apps for the health care sector with the best ideas eligible for over $10,000 in prizes. The collaborative aims to provide the platform for sustainable solutions and start-ups to be created by uniquely-skilled teams that target the health care industry.
“The mobile health sector will grow to $23 billion by 2017,” says Yvonne Pilon, President and CEO of WEtech Alliance. “To catch that wave we need to break down barriers”.
“The ultimate goal is improving patient-centric health care while building cross-sector and cross-border collaboration that spurs tech startups and regional economic development,” says Paul Riser, Director, Technology Based Entrepreneurship at TechTown Detroit.
The weekend event is organized by TechTown Detroit, WEtech Alliance and Hackforge. Partner hospitals include Henry Ford Health System, Windsor Regional Hospital, Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital, Leamington District Memorial Hospital. Research partners include Wayne State University, University of Michigan Fast Forward Medical Innovation, University of Windsor, St. Clair College, Madonna University and University of Detroit Mercy. Key industry partners include entities such as Next Healthcare, New Economy Initiative and incubators such as Ann Arbor SPARK, Downtown Windsor Business Accelerator, EPICentre and more.
“The mobile phone has the potential to become the stethoscope of the 21st century,” says Dr. Irek Kusmierczyk, Director Partnerships at WEtech Alliance. “More than just mobile phones, the hackathon will explore the health care potential of 3D printers and wearable technology such as smart-watches. It will be a playground for seriously creative people.”
