(Windsor, Ontario) – St. Clair College students really showed what they were made of at the 27th Annual Ontario Technological Skills Competition in Waterloo this past week. The College amassed nine medals in the competition, the most they have seen in the past five years. The hard work and dedication of both the students and the faculty coaches illustrated the tremendous talent of St. Clair students and staff.

Sue McLelland, Coordinator for the Skills Ontario event was thrilled with the results. “Each year you hope that students have a great experience and learn something about themselves as they face other students in the province in competition. The icing on the cake is to come home with a medal.”

Nick Kuipers, Faculty member in the Graphic Design program is also a lead for the Graphic Design competition. “This year’s competition was particularly fierce and we were thrilled that our students placed in gold and silver.”

There was also a new competition this year in Powerline Technician and St. Clair College graduates from the Powerline program at Thames Campus in Chatham, also took the top spots in the competition. “Not only did our graduates land wonderful jobs as apprentices in industry, but they took a gold and silver medal in this competition,” says Mark Benoit, Chair of Academic programs at Thames Campus. Eric Stuart is a powerline apprentice with Entegrus in Chatham, and Chad Hedrick and Dennis Rivest are apprenticing with ENWIN.

In addition to the great news coming from Skills Ontario, Sean Previl, who just completed the Journalism and Media Convergence programs, won the prestigious audio Short Feature or Documentary category for the 2016 Broadcast Educators Association of Canada.

Skills Ontario hosted more than 1,500 high school and college students compete in 67 competition sites at RIM Park in Waterloo. The event has grown so much that it will be moved to the Congress Centre in Toronto May 1-3, 2017.

The complete listing of medals by program are:
