Nerd Olympics Coming to Windsor-Essex

August 5, 2016in Tech News 0 Comments

August 5, 2016 – Windsor, ON

Brawn. Speed. Athleticism.

You won’t see these words at the 1st Annual Nerd Olympics hosted by WEtech Alliance.

But there will be plenty of competition as the region’s tech companies face off against each other – dispatching their gladiators in a series of feats of strength and skill.

“It’s about building and strengthening a tech community in Windsor-Essex, and providing a platform where companies and tech employees can connect,” says Yvonne Pilon, President and CEO of WEtech Alliance.  “But let’s be frank – it’s also about nerd glory and regional nerd dominance.”

Teams of nerds will compete in six events over a three-month period from September to November 2016.  These events include:

Event I: Virtual Gaming powered by Silver Tee Golf & Virtual Gaming Centre

Event II: Bowling powered by Superbowl Lanes
Event III: Laser Tag powered by Zap Zone
Event IV: Rock Climbing powered by Windsor Rock Gym
Event V: Escape Room powered by Hidden Trail
Event VI: Ping Pong powered by B.V.’s House of Pong

3D printed medals, created by Kelcom 3D & RapidAM, await podium finishers in each sport, while the team with the most points overall receives the coveted Nerd Cup.

“Corporate camaraderie is good for business,” says Brent McPhail, President and CEO of Brave Controls. “A vibrant tech community also helps retain and attract tech talent to the region”.

“Sometimes getting out of the office and getting out of a comfort zone, meeting new people from a company across town, serves to spark a new idea or collaboration,” says Adam Davis, President and Founder of Next Dimension and Chair of WEtech Alliance.

“The opportunity for tech companies large and small to build partnerships, exchange business and best practises is an additional payoff,” says Yvonne.

The 2016 Nerd Olympics will feature up to sixteen teams representing various tech companies across a number of tech fields.  Each team will field four Olympians per event.

Entry fees vary per team according to the size of the company:

  • Large Companies (25+ employees) – $500 per team
  • Medium Companies (10-24 employees) – $400 per team
  • Small Companies (-10 employees) – $300 per team
  • Individuals are also encouraged to enter and will be assigned to a team of four
Registration is open now at nerdolympicsyqg.eventbrite.ca

Let the games begin!
