New initiative in Windsor provides used textbooks to university students around the world

November 8, 2016in Tech News 0 Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New initiative in Windsor Provides used textbooks to university students around the world
Donate your textbooks to support local and global causes.

What: Windsor community members can now make their used textbooks useful again! Textbooks for Change (T4C) is a social enterprise that provides affordable and accessible post-secondary educational material to students around the world. People can donate their university and college textbooks published in the last 10 years, in any subject.

Where: Community members can donate used textbooks to T4C dropboxes at the University of Windsor (UW) or Goodwill Essex Kent Lambton (EKL) locations.

When: Donate this holiday season to be included in T4C’s next major donation of 25,000 textbooks to Kenyan universities in early 2017.

Who: Chris Janssen, who grew up in Windsor, is the founder of T4C. T4C is a top-rated B Corp and social enterprise that provides affordable and accessible educational materials to students both locally and across the globe. After spending four years at Western University paying for expensive textbooks and travelling to universities in East Africa, Janssen saw an opportunity to repurpose used textbooks to create a social impact. T4C creates an impact by accepting used textbooks and then:

  • Donating 50% of textbooks to East African university libraries annually. To date, T4C has donated over 130,000 textbooks.
  • Selling 20% of textbooks at affordable prices to North American students and using proceeds to fund local impact initiatives, like Goodwill.
  • Diverting tens of thousands of textbooks from landfills by recycling them efficiently.

Why: Donating used textbooks is a simple act with a big impact. Empower students around the world by sharing your love of learning. Furthermore, support your local students and community organizations fundraise and create environmental impact in a new way (while clearing clutter in your basement or garage)! UW has donated over 2,000 textbooks so far, while Goodwill EKL has collected over 18,500 textbooks to support local job creation. T4C loves its strong roots in the Windsor region!
