Windsor, ON: The University of Windsor’s Computer Science Department and Hackforge are coming together to present Winter Hackathon on January 27 to 29, 2017. This new coding competition, open to undergraduate and graduate students at the University, invites participants to take on challenges from the community and industry. Early registration is now open for the free weekend competition.
A hackathon is a popular type of computer programming competition that challenges participants to create or solve a problem within a set amount of time. This is a way for students to get experience outside of the classroom and show off their skills to the public and future employers. The challenges for this competition use open data to solve problems from community organizations and local companies.
“Coding events, such as the Winter Hackathon are great events for our students to demonstrate their technical skills tackling challenges offered by the industry and the community”, says Dr. Stephanos Mavromoustakos, Internship Advisor of the Master of Applied Computing program from the University of Windsor. “With these skills, students manage to get great positions in some of the best employers”. “We’re excited to see how students take on this local data,” says Hackforge Managing Director, Sarah Morris. “This is a great opportunity for real world problem solving through teamwork and creative coding.”
Registration is now open (UWinterHackathon.Eventbrite.ca) for students to reserve their spot in the competition. Mentors (graduates or professionals) are able to sign up. Volunteer positions are also available and high schools students are encouraged to participate in that capacity.
The Winter Hackathon is supported by EPICentre, WEtech Alliance, Ontario Centres of Excellence, Ontario Trillium Foundation, and Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs.
